Thrifty Thursday: Easter bank holiday

Before the recession hit the UK, many people were spending money on credit cards and not really considering what might happen in the future. (more…)

The Review: heritage

1 Manor House

Britain has a diverse heritage. We have culture, a industrial history, a history of commerce and of incredible architecture. This wealth is passed down from one generation to the next. Except that not everyone shared in that inherited wealth. (more…)

The Review: Spring – day 3

1 lake resize

Spring is finally here and we have got the budget out of the way. What a damp squid that was. It seems our national debt as a percentage of GDP is higher than ever and still climbing. (more…)

The Review: The end of winter

1 In the park

It’s the Spring Equinox on Thursday; winter is finally ending. Some weather forecasters are saying we will have a heat wave again like last summer. The ones on the BBC have said Spring starts on the 1st of March; so we’ll ignore them… (more…)

Thrifty Thursday: Mothers Day bargains

I looked at the cards for Mother’s day (30th March) in Aldi the other day. They seem good quality. They are from just 79p and are part of this Sunday’s special buys. There are lots of things that could make a good present for Mother’s Day too. I’m told the cosmetics are good. I had shower gel, hair gel and shampoo! (more…)

The review: Local community and events

1 hospital

I’ve had a strange week. I did finally manage to get to the hospital for my blood test. I was in and out in 10 minutes, which left 20 minutes on my 30 minutes parking. At a pound for 30 minutes, it seemed a shame to waste it. The car park was quite full though and so I decided not to join the Costa Coffee crowd, although the Taste Cafe was a little tempting. (more…)

The review: Too Black Country?

1 wednesbury

I’ve had an interesting week. I walked around the local market on Tuesday and took a few photographs. It wasn’t a good week on the stock market, the banks let the market down. Of course many other businesses depend upon banking and so confidence in the whole economy falls. Maybe, they should pay bankers a bonus when the bank actually makes a profit, rather than double pay on a loss? (more…)

The Review: Art Attack

11 Wednesbury Art

I seem to be gaining more recognition for my interest in art just lately. Not just for trying to create art, but as an art critic. One of the things on my bucket list is to get a picture into an art gallery. I don’t think it will be a local gallery. (more…)

The Review: A week of floods

1 floods

We haven’t been affected much by the floods here in the Black Country. The River Tame flooded a little and I managed to get a photo. It probably flooded a bit in Sandwell Valley Countryside Park too, but the excess would go into Forge Mill Lake. Maybe they need a balancing lake on the Thames?

The Review: Appreciating the countryside

Forge Mill car park

The photo today is one I took in Sandwell Valley last Sunday. The car park at Forge Mill Farm was quite full. Many of the visitors who visit the farm and lake aren’t British. Perhaps they appreciate the English Countryside more? (more…)

The Review: Subjects for bloggers

The Birmingham Canal at Tipton

Today’s picture is the Birmingham canal at Tipton. I’m hoping this photo will win the waterways calendar competition. Tipton isn’t the prettiest place in the country. In fact the whole of the Black Country can’t be described as pretty. I do take some good photos though, I just wish the planners could see views like this. (more…)

The Review: Another week of writing and photography

1 Walsall Canal - winter sunshine

Today’s photo was taken on the Walsall canal at Ocker Hill. I do try to show the Black Country in a good light; that’s when I get a good light to take the photo. This is one of the pictures I’ve entered for the waterways calendar competition.
