A Sunny Day

I took this picture on a sunny day and the weather does affect our moods. A walk on a sunny day can lift our moods. Moods can last for hours, days or weeks and can be positive or negative; good moods or bad moods. I was in quite a good mood over the weekend and so did some comedy blogs on this site. If you missed those you might like to check them out; it could lift your mood to have a giggle. We are dependant on other people for our moods, a bad day with our co-workers and we can be in a bad mood until something positive happens.

A bad mood doesn’t always mean that we are short tempered, it can mean we are depressed or anxious though. A mood is an emotional state that lasts for a while and the emotion can be anger, anxiety, depression, an empathic mood or just plain happy. We can change our mood from negative to positive by changing our environment; a change of scene, going out in the sunshine and eating our sandwiches in the park, can work wonders for our mood.

Looking forward to something or dreading something happening can be a powerful trigger to change and sustain a mood. Looking forward to a holiday can make us feel happy, but a medical or dentist’s appointment can make us miserable while we wait. If possible, it is best to keep the waiting time short, for things we have to do, but don’t want to do. There are so many things these days that cause stress and waiting for appointments must rate in the top ten; if not number one.

We can be the trigger for other people’s good moods and their bad moods and they ours. If we go into work with the intention of spreading happiness even to the office misery; it can do wonders for the welfare and mood of everyone.  Sometimes in a work environment that we can’t avoid, hostilities will break out that make going to work impossible and cause everyone to be in a negative mood, day after day. We tend to be mirrors on each others souls, getting back the happiness or misery that we spread in our daily lives.

While it might be a good idea to smile and be nice, it should sound genuine and you should try to be convincing. If you beam at everyone and keep saying ‘have a nice day’, people might think you were crazy. They would where I live anyway!

Even a comedy programme on television or a good joke making the rounds can lift people’s moods. Some programmes on television are so depressing or even depraved, that they make people depressed and depress their moods.

People in positions of power often don’t think what affect their actions will have on the moods of others, but the decisions they make can be a powerful influence on our collective mood. People in positions of power can be quite selfish and it is the selfless behaviour of people that uplifts people’s moods. We tend to have our mood enhanced when people help us or are nice to us with no ulterior motive. We tend to improve our own moods when we are helpful to other people too. There is a lot we can do to alter our moods when we are feeling anxious or depressed. Avoiding confrontation is also a positive thing we can do to maintain a positive mood. We should just do anything to keep the peace, but we should avoid aggressive behaviour in favour of assertive behaviour.

Changes in mood can be caused by memories which in turn can be triggered others or even by food and drink. Alcohol in particular can trigger either good or bad memories and make us happier or depressed. Even music can affect a change in our moods and some music is perceived as happy music and some music is perceived as sad or depressing. Many classical music pieces are considered to be sombre such as Chopin’s funeral march, while some popular songs with a catchy tune are considered to be lively and happy. The song, ‘Happy Birthday’ could be associated with a depressing event in someone’s mind, but is normally perceived as a ‘happy’ song.

We can improve our mood by changing our environment and we often do by having days out and seeking leisure activities. Holidays (vacations) can be very important to us because they help us relax and change our mood to a more positive mood. Some leisure activities don’t always work as we planned them, a night out in a noisy club can turn out to be stressful; a walk in the country can also turn out to be stressful, simply because we get bored. Natural surroundings tend to be relaxing  but after the hectic pace of modern life, they can seem too quiet or too boring. A day out in the country can be great but you still need things to do and things to stimulate the mind. Take a picnic!

    • Yes, The sun is shining this morning in England and I am looking forward to a day out communing with nature and taking photos for my blog. It even influences what I eat, I’m eating more salad!

  2. I think it is my responsibility to handle my own bad moods, we do all have them from time to time, but not share them and bring others down! You’ve made some wonderful connections here. I think you’re right that sometimes after a very hectic period or in times of great stress the natural world has much to offer, but sometimes a day totally devoid of noise and chaos can be overwhelming in an entirely different way.     • Hi Debra,

      I was handing out leaflets and talking to people yesterday for a mental health charity and it was a change, but the noise in the supermarket was irritating. I enjoyed taking photographs by the river later and the calming influence of nature. Those photos are in today’s blog; which will be posted any minute! 🙂
