How to write fiction

Merry Xmas

Usually on a Wednesday, I do my how to write a novel articles. If you want to write fiction, it can be a good idea to start with short stories. You can make a plan of what you intend to write. I wanted to write a short story for Christmas and I wanted it to be funny.

The ending of a funny story is like the punch line of a joke and so I even though I had an idea for the story. I needed a good ending. Writing comedy is hard because you need the element of surprise and comedy is quite clever, it the clever use of words and timing. When you write comedy, you need to use punctuation to do you timing too. Many people are rejecting the semi colon; but I find it useful for a longer pause than a comma gives. That is so useful in comedy writing. The ellipsis too is useful, it has three dots, just three; not more, not less…

This is my short Christmas story that you can download. I really need feedback on that, so please read it and come back and comment. What did you think? The most important thing is: Was it funny? When you write comedy, not everyone will find it funny. I think people in the UK will understand the jokes, but they aren’t understood by people in other countries. My Christmas story opens in a new page and you click the link to read it. You can save it too. It is suitable for most eBook readers. I hope you like it!

I’ll look forward to you comments.

  1. I have read your story and enjoyed it but I didn’t like Oliver much at the beginning, especially when he bumped the car. I think if he was called Ollie from the start he would appear more friendly.], his name in full form seems very formal and stiff. I think it would be nice if he cooked breakfast for Ivy one morning.
    Just my opinions.

    • Hi,

I wanted people’s opinions! I thought some people would figure out his name was Ollie Wood at the beginning or somewhere along the way! I think Ollie cooked lunch and dinner and so it’s plausible for Ivy to cook breakfast. In a short story, people don’t want too much detail just enough to fire their imaginations.

Thanks for the comment, at least one person liked it. I shall probably get opinions from all my friends who are authors, later!
