Writing and photography

A lot of people think writing is easy, until they try it.  You get writer’s block, lack of inspiration and then sometimes you read back what you’ve written and think it’s rubbish! Living life is the main inspiration for writers, doing stuff and then writing about it. I’m lucky I suppose, I’m at an age when lots has happened to me. So I have a little experience.

I’ve also written over a 1,000 blog posts and that experience helps too. Taking photographs has made me more aware. I am constantly looking at things to see what to photograph next. I notice architecture more and I play with words more. You have to have a fascination for words. It helps if you understand social media too. A link to this blog post will be posted to Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn and the blog is recognised by the major search engines.  We all want people to read what we write.

I don’t have many readers so far today, but  people don’t have so much time in the morning. The readers tend to come online in the evening and then even later as people in other time zones come online. You have to be aware that the internet serves the world and lots of different time zones. I even have different clocks on my desktop for different countries that I talk to. My friend in California is still asleep at 4am and it’s evening in China. We write stuff for people to read and so we have to be aware of our readers and even try to interact with them through the comments box and through social media sites like Facebook.

WordPress sites are more than websites, they are content management systems. This one is a subdomain of WordPress, but I also have a Zillion Ideas which I own, but also runs WordPress. I have more freedom on there to have advertising and sponsorship if I want it. Websites with a memorable name can become quite valuable and you can made money from selling advertising space or from affiliate links.

Anyone can get a WordPress blog and become a writer and with digital cameras quite cheap, you can easily do you own photography and develop your skills as a writer and photographer. There is a lot of competition and only the most dedicated will enjoy writing and photography and stick at it. It can be frustrating when you don’t get the readers that you had hoped for. If you design your site well, make it look good and write well, then people will read what you write.

Writing is about getting across ideas and influencing people. If you try to influence people with the same tired ideas, day after day, they will soon drift away and read something else. You have to keep your content fresh and inspired.

What do you think? Have you tried writing blog posts? Do you want to be a writer? Make a start by sharing your thoughts in the comments box. You can also follow me on Twitter. I welcome guest posts for a zillion ideas too.

      • Jacob,

There is a Facebook badge in the sidebar, or just click this link – I’ve been blogging for over 5 years, but it’s nearly 3 years on WordPress. I started this one in September 2010, but didn’t get going much until the beginning of 2011. I’ve been posting nearly every day since. I’ve done 832 posts now! 🙂
