Psychology |That Monday morning feeling
It’s Monday morning and it’s raining. I tend to associate Monday morning with feeling quite miserable and so do many other people. Maybe after a weekend enjoying ourselves it’s the return to work and a drive through the rain that embeds this association into people’s minds.
Associations
I have a theory that people take a negative view to many things on Monday morning. I think it could be a good time to buy on the stock market, taking advantage of the negativity of others. It’s probably a good day to buy a second hand car too. Associations are very important to us, they inspire feelings in us that are based on previous experiences.
Thank God it’s Friday
Many people associate Friday with a sense of relief that another week is over and the weekend is about to begin. Why don’t people say “Thank God it’s Saturday”? We are talking about emotional associations and logic doesn’t come into it. We can associate emotions with all kinds of things, but often it is things that are important to us.
Food
We tend to be quite emotional about food and attach emotional association to certain food. For many people chocolate is an effective antidepressant. Alcohol drinks also tend to have emotional associations attached to them. Food and drink keeps us alive, it’s important and so we are more emotional about it.
People
People are important and so we associate certain emotions to certain people. You might dread running into someone again or the thought of meeting some special person could make you feel very differently about your day. People are important and so you associate different moods with different people.
Places
We associate different feeling with different places too. We might dread going to the doctors and really hate the place, when what makes us nervous might be what we might be told while we’re there or the way we might be treated while we’re there. But we tend to associate with the building itself. Hospitals have a similar effect on us.
How can I cheer myself up on a damp wet Monday morning? I could have some biscuits with my tea. I associate strongly with food or even decide on something nice for lunch. I could phone a special person and have a chat. There are negative associations and positive ones, fortunately we can choose a positive one. Even on a Monday…

Hi Suebee,
I think today was worse for me because it hasn’t stopped raining. I should be used to it, this is England! At least I managed 2 blog posts this morning! 🙂
