Thrifty Thursday: Supermarket bargains

The Aldi super-six this week are Royal Gaia apples (6/7/or 8), sweet pointed peppers (2), persimmon (4), large flat mushrooms (250g), cocktail vine tomatoes (250g) and conference pears (6 or 7). They are all 89p each. That offer runs from today until the 20th of November. If you’re wondering like me what a persimmon is, it’s a fruit. Make sure it’s ripe before you eat it.

Persimmon

The persimmon contains lots of vitamin C so they are very good for you in winter. You can find a lot of videos on YouTube about how to eat them. You can save the seeds and try to grow your own too!

Aldi

The meat on offer in Aldi includes sausages this week. Try those with baked potatoes. Cook the potatoes in the oven and then cut them in half and add a sausage, just like making a potato hotdog. They are delicious. The chicken drumsticks and thighs pack is 50p off at 2.49 too. Aldi chicken is fresh and better than most of the big supermarkets. They usually have small and medium whole chickens.

The Thursday special buys includes a hairdryer for 9.99. I think the variety pack of cereals might be popular with the kids for 99p. There are lots more bargains, including a snow shovel.  They have wheel trims for 10.99. I wonder if they would fit my car?

The Sunday special buys offers even more bargains. I might look at the thermal socks; my feet freeze when I wear boots in the snow. We have to prepare for winter now. I must check to see if I have any salt left for when it snows. I also check I have things for the car like de-icer and a scraper.

Poundland

I got my ice scraper from Poundland. It even has a light on it. The de-icer from there was a really big can for a pound.

Matalan

I’ve been looking for a new coat and I see they have some new ones in Matalan. I hope they send me another discount voucher before Christmas.

Tesco

Someone moaned that I never feature the bigger supermarkets like Tesco. So I looked at their special offers. There was a bottle of Chardonnay; ‘half price’. I clicked the link to see if it was the stuff from France or one from some obscure South American country. I got a error, ‘page not found’. FAIL, Tesco…  I have a decent bottle of Chardonnay from Aldi, it’s always 4.99 there.

The Marks and Spencer sale has ended, but they have offers. Buy two cases of champagne and save 25%. Next time I visit Downing Street I must tell Dave and George about that…

Asda

Asda has chocolates on special offer. I bet Dave and George will be getting Ferrero Rocher to go with their Mark and Sparks champagne at Christmas.

Running the car

My car in in the garage for a service and MOT today. So I took some time to work out how much it costs me. I took the purchase price and deducted the current value then divided by 108 to give me my monthly depreciation over the 9 years I’ve had it. Then I added the cost of insurance, breakdown cover, car tax, MOT and services and finally petrol. I think at 135 pounds a month, I’m doing quite well. How much does your car cost to run? I think it might be cheaper if I bought a small car, but what I saved on insurance, tax and petrol I would probably lose on depreciation.

GiffGaff

I’m getting used to my new Samsung Galaxy 2. I think on GiffGaff it will probably it will probably cost me about £5 a month to run it. That isn’t too bad and I am saving a fiver a month on my landline. I  paid my line rental 12 months in advance to save another fiver a month too. I  swapped my calls package to evenings and weekend and had a TV box installed with TalkTalk.  I don’t watch much TV, so it’s good for me. It’ll be the Christmas Crap season soon, so I’ll probably watch it even less. I took a photo yesterday with my new phone and imported it into the computer to edit with PhotoScape. I could take photos of persimmons in Aldi now…

    • Hi,

I’m half asleep today. Thanks, I corrected the price to 89p and added a link so people can check for themselves. I haven’t seen that brandy. They do have good offers on drinks though. I just saw they’re having different soft drinks this week, so I might get something different from lemonade! I’ve bought all my Christmas booze from there already! 🙂
