Thrifty Thursday: thrifty savings

Picture of Aldi

Aldi

The Aldi super-six this week are radishes (300g), button mushrooms (200g), snack pack grapes (170g), carrots (1 Kg), Jersey Royal new potatoes (450g) and cherry tomatoes (300g). They are all 49p and the offer lasts until Wednesday 2nd July.

Today’s special buys are mostly camping equipment including a 4 person tent and a gazebo.

The Sunday special buys includes lots of items for cyclists.

I went to Aldi yesterday. I bought some lamb mince again; the shepherd’s pies I made last week were delicious. I had six cans of Brasserie lager shandy for 1.49. I was quite surprised, that was quite good.

Poundland

Poundland like Aldi tend to be out of stock of the things I want. They didn’t have the pens and notebooks I wanted last time I went in. I can stock up on those. It’s harder to stock up on Aldi, dandelion and burdock!

Matalan

Matalan seem to be having more famous brands in like Wrangler jeans. They tend to be the ‘classic’ styles, so be careful what you’re buying.  I prefer retro styles, everyone wears the latest fashions, retro is more exclusive and the antithesis of fashion. You can buy cheap clothes and still be stylish.

The economy

It seems that the British economy isn’t doing quite as well as many pundits were saying it was. This week the signals from the Bank of England were confused and panicked the stock market. The value of the pound dropped as it seems that interest rates are to be held at record lows for some time to come. It seems people with million pound homes and rock bottom mortgage payments can breathe a sigh of relief. The rest of us will have to shop around and that means more customers for Aldi and Lidl. I just hope they will realise we need basic foods and not champagne and strawberries.

Don’t forget to check out you local markets and car boots sales for bargains too. I’m growing potatoes, runner beans and tomatoes in my garden this year! That will save a few quid and they taste so much better.

  1. Re’ your growing potatoes, runner beans and tomatoes this year.

If it’s successful, I hope you do a write up on it.

    • Hi,

You can be sure of that, I’ll even be taking photos! There are flowers on the runner beans and the potatoes are doing well. The tomato plants are still tiny, but they grow quite fast. I can eat runner beans all day long, so they’re the most important.

Thanks for taking the time to comment. 🙂
