Thrifty Thursday: Saving money
The Aldi super-six this week are courgettes (500g), salad potatoes (1Kg), nectarines (4/5), cocktail vine tomatoes (250g), cauliflower and chestnut mushrooms (250g). They are all 69p each.
The super-six meat offers includes sirloin steak in red wine and shallot sauce (390g) for 5.99.
Today’s special buys are mostly food, but they do have a pressure sprayer for the garden. The last one I had from there broke before I could use it. I’ll try again and see if these are any stronger. I need to spray my runner beans, I have a black fly invasion. At least I won’t need to buy veggies for this weekend, I’ll be having fresh ones from the garden…
Sunday’s special buys are mostly ladies clothing, but they also have slug pellets and ant powder. With a heat wave forecast we might be battling more creepy crawlies… I might have the fly spray. I have an electric fly killer, but a spray is sometimes useful. They have the electronic fly killers for 7.99 too.
The latest craze for kids is loom bands. They have them at Poundland, watch out for a 4 for £3 offer. Be careful with those, one kid was blinded when the bit of plastic shot into his eye after the loom was stretched and released.
It seems that people are still struggling to make ends meet and so discount stores are getting busier. With banks charging 20% interest on credit cards and only paying 1.5% on the new ISA’s it’s not surprising that people have to shop around. The banks need the money though, to pay their fines for mis-selling and fiddling the LIBOR rate.

For a cold drink during the heat wave. Pour some cold (black) tea over ice cubes until the glass is half full, add a dash of raspberry juice and top up with cheap lemonade. It’s less fizzy than having just lemonade and so quenches the thirst better, it also tastes much better and it’s cheaper too!
morrison’s offer is better. i just saw their advert in the i (independent) 3 for £1.50. and it includes 4peaches, tomatoes, plums, celery and pineapple. 50peach if u buy 3. i am off to buy them.

Hi,
Thanks for that. I forgot Morrison’s are doing offers on fruit and veg. The one near me is a bit slow on the check out, so I don’t like going in for a few things. A lettuce lasts me for months too, I can’t cope with 2 of them! I have been given some home grown lettuce and I’ll have runner beans soon. We do pop into Morrison’s sometimes for a drink, it’s near our market. I might check out the offers if we go this week. I like fish from Morrison’s…
Thanks for the info. I’ll try to post pictures and info on growing runner beans soon! 🙂

at first when i was in tesco and saw their 2 for 75p, i thought i have to buy the same item, but it is not so. u can mix and match. so also with morrisons, as long as they are in the list u can take one of each to make 3 items and get them for £1.50. as for checking out in morrisons, i always use the self service check out and that is fast. u just have to remember that in morrisons, their machine wants u to press ‘cash’, before u put money in the slots… or it wont accept your cash.

oh, i forgot to add courgettes too in the morrisons list. also tesco is doing 2for 75p on lettuce, beetroot, and celery. go to a big branches, as it may run out of stock in small stores.

I hate those do it yourself checkouts! I checked my Aldi bill today and a third of what I had bought I didn’t really need. I’ll enjoy the beer though… 🙂

i am glad i dont buy anything i dont need. but then i am very disciplined. i guess i should thank you for giving aldi the profits to continue trading. haha. the self check out can be very useful. because u can check the prices. once i mistakenly took something that was not on sale, but because i can see the price, i was able to get it removed , not to mention there is no human person involved and so u dont have to get embarrassed. now if u have used the self check out, u could remove all those unnecessary items, or not check them. it allows u to have second thoughts which if u have used a human being, u would be too embarrassed to stop them passing the items through.
