Christmas

The review: carousels

SNOW SMALL

Christmas is over and although we didn’t have a White Christmas, Boxing Day gave us a little snow. The street light isn’t working in the street outside my house, so it was very dark when I took this photo. Aren’t digital cameras marvellous? (more…)

Boxing Day: more Frying Pan photos

I hope everyone is enjoying Christmas. It hasn’t been a white Christmas here, but it is getting colder; it was freezing outside when I woke this morning.  Today’s photo was taken in 2011. I think we had snow quite early that year. (more…)

Christmas Day: Life and soul

I hope everyone is enjoying Christmas. Some people seem to enjoy it more than others; they are the life and soul of the party. They seem confident and loud.

Christmas Eve: Dickensian thoughts

Manor House Merry Christmas

It’s Christmas Eve and during Christmas, I tend to think of the year that has just gone by and the one that is about to start. I write articles here on WordPress and on a Zillion ideas and some of those get featured on the Express and Star website (my local newspaper) and these get syndicated on The YamYam. (more…)

Christmas Eve: Narrow boats and canals

Wednesbury churches

Today, as my title suggests, I’m going to use some of the photos I’ve taken this year of narrowboats and canals. I have a lot of readers who are bloggers, so I’m going to include some information and advice on blogging too.

Photography: Top pictures of 2014

Spring picture of a lake

I took this picture in April and it must be my best landscape of 2014. The colours are great. I tried to improve it today and it looked better a tiny bit lighter, but it’s hard to make it better. (more…)

The Sunday Ramble: challenging

DSC_2888

Christmas is nearly here and it looks like being ‘challenging’. Challenging is the word the politicians and other politically correct people say when they don’t have a bloody clue. There are people with greater life challenges. (more…)

The review: Do we have a right to judge?

Merry X edit

While most of us are thinking about Christmas, many people in the UK are worrying about where their next meal is coming from or whether they will end up on the streets begging. Its freezing where I am and will be even colder tonight. (more…)

Photography: Christmas shots

Wednesbury Christmas tree

It’s nearly Christmas and so there are lots of new things to point your camera at. I’ve bought some new filters, a warm filter, soft focus and a 4 point star filter. I used the 4 point star filter to take this shot of the town Christmas tree. (more…)

Photography: shots in the dark

Wednesbury Christmas

I took this photo last November at the official switch-on of the town Christmas lights and I didn’t even use a flash. There is quite a lot of light and the camera will adjust to the low light. I was using quite a fast shutter speed and a wide aperture. If you are taking photos like this, you’ll get decent pictures on auto. (more…)

Thrifty Thursday: Early Christmas presents?

The Aldi super-six this week are plums (500g), satsumas (600g), cox apples (6-10 pack), mixed peppers (3), butternut squash and mushrooms (380g). They are all 69p and the offer lasts until the 5th of November. (more…)

Christmas Day in the Black Country

This Christmas Day post will be syndicated to my local readers later and a link will go on Twitter for all my followers on there; Facebook will also get a instant link. That is the power of the Internet at Christmas. There is no need to send a letter to Santa these days, you can email the guy. You might remember that I wrote and published a Christmas Story last year. You can click that link and read it today! I am writing a sequel, but it’s still not finished. It took me weeks to think of an ending, that is always the hardest part. (more…)

Photography: Calendar photos

1 boats

I need some photos for a waterways calendar competition, so I was out in the freezing cold on Sunday taking photos of the canals. The sun came out a little for this one, but there were still dark clouds. It’s a nice picture, but is it good enough for a calendar? I would have preferred more light and camera shake is also a problem when it’s that cold. You shiver! (more…)

The weekend review

Bridge to Moorcroft

Today’s picture is of the canal bridge over to Moorcroft Wood. I am still looking for a suitable photo for the Waterways calendar competition. I might go back there tomorrow and take another shot of that bridge at a higher resolution. (more…)

The weekend review

1 The George

I read a really good article yesterday about how to take night pictures. They say you should consider the exposure triangle to set your camera for this type of picture. That is set the ISO, aperture and speed. While I was doing all that and setting up a tripod, I would probably get mugged for the camera. (more…)

That offer lasts until the end of the month with new offers beginning on the 2nd of January. I think we can assume they will be closed on the 1st of Jan.

Wednesbury at Christmas

1 Wednesbury at Christmas

I found out this morning that some of my photos are on the website of the local newspaper.  I was asked if I was from the Express and Star when I was taking them. Newspapers are fighting for survival and have to adjust to the new era of digital communication. Advertising is changing too with Google dominating. (more…)

Christmas Photography and editing

Wednesbury Market

I didn’t have many new pictures last week, but this week I have lots! I went to photograph the switch on of the Christmas lights on Friday and got lots of photos. It took me 24 hours to thaw out afterwards though.

No, I’m not from the Express and Star!

Wednesbury Couple

This couple asked me to take their photo on Friday when I was photographing the switch on of the Christmas lights in Wednesbury. This post will probably be syndicated on the YamYam and so maybe they will see their photo. Earlier two rather rude women asked if I was from the Express and Star, the regional newspaper. They walked away uninterested when they realised I wasn’t.

Thrifty Thursday: Christmas Countdown 26 days

The super-six at Aldi today are tomatoes (6), broccoli, swede, chantenay carrots (500g), onions (1kg) and lemons (3). They are all 49p. Those offers continue until the 11th of December. They have lamb and pork chops on offer this week too.

Christmas is coming

DSC_3517

Christmas is coming and it’s getting colder in the UK. The energy companies are increasing the prices of gas and electricity as usual. If the people running these companies or the regulators had any morality at all they would at least increase prices in the spring or summer. Like the government they are immoral.

The Aldi super six this week are cherry tomatoes (250g), broccoli, snack pack grapes (150g), carrots (1Kg), savoy cabbage and onions (1Kg). They are all 49p each. That offer ends on the 25th of September. The weather is getting cold now and so we have to think about winter soups and stews to keep us warm.
