At one time, churches and pubs where at the heart of the community. They provided the venue for civil society to grow as small groups, independent of government, did things to bring the community together and make it better. Cutting out the middleman can be difficult, sometimes farm shops can be as expensive as going to a local shop, but they do sometimes offer better quality and freshness. There are so many middlemen these days, they add the cost for their premises, marketing and advertising and often VAT is added too. (more…)

My picture today is of a lock-keepers cottage. It looks like an old picture, but in fact it’s quite recent. I removed the satellite dish and television aerial. It looks quite picturesque, but demonstrates nicely, that you can’t trust your perceptions these days. The truth is out there, but buried in a pile of ONS statistics. (more…)
