Welcome to my Sunday ramble, when I ramble on about whatever happens to be on my mind. I was out at the local church hall taking photos for a charity event last night and so I’m struggling to stay awake today.

Driving me crazy #review

I’m not as young as I used to be. I look at things I can’t change and become resigned to it. I appreciate many things more as  experience has taught me they are valuable. I saw a comment by a young driver who thinks all old people should be banned from motorways, because  to him they hog the outside lane.

Offers and special buys #thrifty

The Aldi super-six this week are red onions (1kg), sweetbite peppers (150g), chestnut mushrooms (150g), rhubarb (400g), Jersey Royal new potatoes (500g) and green beans (220g). They are all 59p each and the offer lasts until Thursday 4th of June.

local landscapes #photography

This landscape is nothing special, unless you live in one of those houses on the right or recognise the road as being in your neighbourhood. Photographs are part of art and so stimulate interest and the more ‘engagement’ there is the more valuable the picture is to the viewers. In 50 years time this will be treasure!

Dark secrets #Sunday #ramble

Welcome to another Sunday ramble and today my lead picture is of the mill pool. It looks scenic, but if we dig into it’s past will we find dark secrets ? On the other side of the pool is heathland, but part of it is now a school field for what used to be Menzies high school.

Civil society #review

At one time, churches and pubs where at the heart of the community. They provided the venue for civil society to grow as small groups, independent of government, did things to bring the community together and make it better. Everything from boys scouts to the pub dart team provided community cohesion.

Cutting out the middle man #thrifty

Cutting out the middleman can be difficult, sometimes farm shops can be as expensive as going to a local shop, but they do sometimes offer better quality and freshness. There are so many middlemen these days, they add the cost for their premises, marketing and advertising and often VAT is added too.

How to get the perfect shot. #photography

Most cameras are really smart now, they can recognise subjects and have built in light meters to help you get that perfect picture. They can’t do everything though, what if you want a dark mysterious picture? Then you have to set the camera yourself, rather than relying on auto settings.

It could be worse #Sunday #ramble

So, the Tories pulled a fast one. Instead of targeting Labour seats they went after the Lib Dems instead. It makes sense, rather than go after  the left wing constituencies, they swayed the middle of the road voter to turn right. It could be worse though, even though we have five more years of austerity.

The truth is out there #review

My picture today is of a lock-keepers cottage. It looks like an old picture, but in fact it’s quite recent. I removed the satellite dish and television aerial. It looks quite picturesque, but demonstrates nicely, that you can’t trust your perceptions these days. The truth is out there, but buried in a pile of ONS statistics.
