Britain needs a little luck

1 Loxdale

Another week ends as a New Year begins. We are still at the beginning of winter in Britain and some parts of the country are on severe weather warnings; there has already been flooding. We need a little luck with the weather now, less rain and we need the rest of the winter to be mild. No snow like last winter please! (more…)

Remember when the British invaded America?

MAY

I watched a few programmes on TV last night about the British rock bands that invaded America in the 1960’s and since. The onslaught was led by the Beatles and then the ‘ugly’ band; the Rolling Stones. That was a great export and Sweden took on the world with Abba too. America used Hollywood to take on the world with movies. Now the Chinese have taken on the world with consumer goods, maybe we need a new cultural revolution in both Britain and America.

Champagne and strawberries for the rich

Walsall

When I look at town centre shops, I see charity shops, pawn brokers and pay day loans. Then there are discount stores like Poundland. I also see some signs of wealth in this photo, some posh shops and expensive take-away food. I also see a pedestrian area that must have cost a fortune to lay out. The blue signs of the local council are evident everywhere. The top council officers and the top councillors probably don’t use the charity shops. Do they?

The scandal of British poverty

Money - Seeing the future

I usually try to bring you bargains on a Thursday, but you just have to shop around in your own neighbourhood and get what you can. Finance Friday | Eurozone Crisis

UK Money

The problems in the Eurozone rumbles on and it appears to affect the UK economy. The left wingers in Europe want to borrow money and print money and go on a spending spree and the right wingers want austerity. The former appears to be folly and the latter means fewer police officers and nurses and more unemployment. Mere mortals like me tend to invest and cut down on spending on trivial things. The government could invest in some things and keep building companies afloat. When I was a child there was a baby boom after the war and the government had massive debts. They built council houses, cheap houses for people to live in; no buy to let then. (more…)

What’s wrong with this country?

SUNDAY 130

I wanted to write about stupid stuff this morning. Like, why do we erect stupid statues of 6 legged horses, that no one can see. Why does the new college have a wave shaped roof? Why  is the art (gallery?) pink? Why are the stupid people in charge of everything? Why has petrol gone up from 128.9 before Christmas to 138.9 now? Why did the government give lots of money to councils to put disabled crossings on the roads everywhere and then cut benefits for disabled people? Why do I have to pay vehicle excise licence on my car as well as putting petrol in it at an obscene price? Why are they obsessed with stupid acronyms? (more…)
