Photography: focusing

Walsall Art Gallery (34)

On digital cameras, you press the shutter release button part way down, until the camera has focused. Many cameras will bleep to tell you it’s focused. Most bridge cameras and DSLRs have focus points to help you focus. My D3200 has 11 focus points. They show up as red dots through the viewfinder. (more…)

Neodigital Art | Winter weather

Cambridge art

This photograph was taken last weekend by Fei Ye, an International student from China who is studying at my local University in Wolverhampton. It was taken in Cambridge, where it rained all day. The shot wasn’t straight and so I straightened it a little and edited it to make it a little more artistic. It’s unusual and has lots of depth as the canal goes away from us.

Neodigital Art | The Black Country

MERRIONS 2012 007

There was a break in the rain on Sunday and so we set out to take more photographs. It was early and the sun was high in the sky and so it was a good time to photograph woodland. First stop was Moorcroft Wood and this is a picture of Moorcroft pool; otherwise known as the Sanna. I have found some history to this pool and there were two more pools that have dried up. I think if this one filled up it would overflow into the next one. I usually get a tree in the foreground to get depth to the picture, but that has changed now and I had to stand in front of the trees to see anything. (more…)

Neodigital Art | Photons

July first 014

Photons are little bundles of energy that we call light. They come from the sun (when we aren’t making our own), bounce around and get reflected off everything. They bounce around rather like a ball bounces off different surfaces, some surfaces make a ball bounce fast if it’s hard, soft surfaces slow it down. Light gets absorbed by dark colours and reflected more by light colours. You can see where it is being reflected most in this picture, by the lighter colours. Now why is the green and foliage so dark in the foreground? (more…)

Neodigital Art | Monochrome

West Brom High Street

If you can find old pictures and scan them you can produce something interesting. This is an old picture of West Bromwich, High Street. Look how wide it is and how wide the pavements are enough room for the tram, cars, parking and the crowds of shoppers! It is monochrome because it was taken at the beginning of the 20th century. (more…)

Neodigital Art | Transport

Tipton 042

Yes, I have been out taking transport photos. This is of two locks on the canal that are side by side and I haven’t seen anything like this anywhere else. These would have been built in the 18th or 19th century. (more…)

Neodigital Art | Blue skies

LOCAL ART 072

Light is very important when you’re taking photographs and I haven’t had very good light so far this year. This month has been typical dark skies and April showers. In this photograph, you can see a little blue sky, white clouds but some darker cloud too. You can see that the sky if reflecting lots of light and that light is creating a reflection on the water.  If you’re a regular reader, you will have seen photographs of the lake that I often take pictures of; that is behind those trees.  You can marvel at the way they have built that canal, it dates back at least two hundred years. (more…)

Neodigital Art | Poor light

SUNDAY 016

I took some photographs on Sunday after the rain but the light wasn’t very good. I can however go back and take the shots again. This was waste ground at the back of some houses that has been turned into a park. It doesn’t take much, grass, trees and flowers, then they have a valuable community resource where people can walk and watch the seasons change. (more…)

Neodigital Art | Light on the lens

Looking for depth

I set the camera on landscape for this shot which gives a narrow aperture and some depth of field. The shot in is focus and there are a lot of interesting colours. I couldn’t get anything in the foreground though to give the shot depth. I have edited and made the photograph darker to get the colours right. (more…)

Neodigital Art | Snow and Ice

DSCF8786

I took this photograph on Sunday and the light was reflecting nicely off the snow and ice but the moisture in the air was liquefying and so creating a mist. This photograph looks  misty but I did catch that goose in flight. The snow was beginning to melt by then. (more…)

This is a picture of the local church, taken just before a storm and so it was quite dark. I decided to make it monochrome with a blue tint. I think it’s one of my better pictures. (more…)

Photo edit

I’ve started this week with a screen shot to show the photo edit in Windows Live photo gallery. You can see all the tools you have for editing. I’ve cropped my photo for widescreen, increased the contrast, gave it more ‘highlights’ and increased the colour temperature adding warmth. I took this photo on Saturday with a wide aperture after the rain. (more…)

Neodigital Art – Update Eight

MILL 072

Today’s picture is of two bridges. The river flows under the road and down towards the bridge shown in the second picture. To the left on this picture a brook appears to join with the main river but it may be simply coming from ground water drainage. We followed the river up stream over the road and it was fed by a brook and it appears to have many sources. It’s obviously interesting to look at the geography and trace the river. It flows to the right and then under a eighteenth century bridge. The road is call Bentley Mill Way and the river would have provided power for a mill at some time. (more…)
