I’ve used a spooky picture of the churchyard to begin today’s post. I think the original church was built about 700 years ago, replacing a castle and maybe some kind of pagan church. I can spend more time writing my Sunday ramble today, because I don’t have to cook Sunday lunch; it’s already cooked.

Learning from history

I’ve  used one of my pictures of the full moon today. Sometimes I think the loonies have taken over the world. Then I look back at history and realise they have always been in charge. I watched the Second World War in colour last night on YouTube. The depression of the 1930’s led to world war.

The Propaganda Society

In the olden days, the Lord of the Manor lived in his Manor House and protected it with walls and a moat. These days the rich and powerful have more sophisticated tools to control the peasants. They have spin and propaganda. They can influence beliefs on a grand scale, using many psychological tools. It is done through many channels, that we call the media. This isn’t new, it’s been done for many years and can have disastrous results. Hitler demonized the Jews with propaganda, here in the UK it can be anyone who claims welfare benefits. Now though, it seems almost no one is safe; even bankers are demonized for giving themselves bonuses! Where will it all end? (more…)

At the beginning of the last century Britain was a Christian country and people believed in God. Religions gave the masses rules to live their lives by and if they didn’t follow them, they could go to hell; literally. It seems Britain lost some of it’s belief in God at the time of the first world war and who can blame people for losing their faith in the face of such horror. The second world war with such inhumanity as concentration camps and gas chambers was further evidence that either God doesn’t exist or that God exists, but he has given up on the human race.  So, we are alone, insecure and anxious… (more…)

You can collect all kinds of things, old postcards, stamps, coins and it doesn’t have to be expensive. You can even collect advertising leaflets and posters. You can get those free! The old leaflets and posters from years ago are valuable today, but you need to be selective. You need to have an eye for good design and visual appeal. You can even collect packaging, bottles and jars. (more…)
